Leg One Completed: Marblehead MA to Hampton VA is complete just as hurricane season heats up. We plan to return in November to sail her to the Bahamas.
Over the last several weeks the trip anxiety has dissolved as we developed a rhythm of working seamlessly together. The days of practice have become easier in terms of handling Kailoa and making decisions. Our practiced drill of acquainting ourselves to new harbors and the surrounding area are well honed.
After months of preparation, and over 50 days on Kailoa, it is amazing to reflect on all the decision making that occurs on any given moment of any day on a vessel. From the interpretation of weather, wind, navigating in all conditions including fog, ensuring battery charge, as well as fuel and water are adequate. Mastering the art of anchoring, grabbing a mooring ball or docking in a variety of geometries of entry, avoiding freighters, navigating tidal and wind conditions.
Every day has been a practice of how to get from A to B and find safe harbor. We coped with the variety of conditions from the death of our dog Ellie, cold wet weather, no sleep, and extreme heat and humidity. The Silver lining…the beauty of living in the elements, seeing the sails fill in the wind, watching the rain, seeing the sun rise and set, a bird in flight, schools of fish surface….
We visited 22 ports, passed through 7 states (RI, CT, NY, NJ, DE, MD, VA) along the 720 NM journey. Most special was the ability to connect with many friends and family along the way (Kate, Lynn, Karen, Pete, Janet, Mark, Hap, Dee, Taylor, Evan, Ally, Brock, Crew, Mason, Anne, Jim, Irene, Steve, and Barbara (aka Todd). Thank you all!!!! With gratitude for the safe completion of leg one.
