 A Trip Down Memory Lane

The drive from Marblehead, MA to Hampton, VA along the dense I95 corridor is about 12 hours or 630 miles, so we made a pit stop at the University of Delaware, our alma matter. It was here that we first met in 1976 during our freshman year at a sailing party, 48 years ago. We laughed at our younger goofy selves, reminisced about how little we knew at the time, and our quest to find our way in the world. We began dating our senior year and later married in 1982, literally a lifetime ago. Here we are again, truly a full circle moment; where we have the time and capacity to travel in a way our student selves could have only imagined.

It’s hard to put into words what our 48-year friendship, marriage, and partnership has meant to each of us. With full careers, home owning, raising our two daughters, we have a lifetime of teamwork. We know each other so well that our moods are read by each other in a movement or a glance. The ability to collaborate on decision making is key. Most importantly we have fun together.

Our walking trip down memory lane included Pencader, Main Street, the Mall and of course Deer Park Tavern where we enjoyed beers, a shot of Southern Comfort and a Burger. The views of familiar buildings were juxtaposed with improvements to the footbridge from Pencader to Old College, new high-rise dorms that replaced Pencader K, L, M and Maine Street was sprinkled with new breweries. The stop was splendid and a fitting start to Leg 2.

Written in appreciation for the life journey and all the blessings we have been graced with!!
